Church No. 2
Acrylic moulding paste, oil, resin, and found dirt and plaster chips on wood panel
10x10"
2016
This painting copies the colors and textures seen while visiting the ruins of an abandoned church in Detroit, Michigan. Although the building was in decay, the space was slowly being overtaken by nature and filled with the colors and energy of new growth and bright saturating sunlight, giving the space the feeling of hope and light in its apparent death. This piece was created by layering a plaster-like material that resembles the texture of church walls with oil paint. The base layers were then covered with paint chips, plaster and dirt taken from the ground at the visited church and embedded in layers of poured resin.
